“PRAGMATIC” gets bad reputation
Some think it’s too cold, too practical, too calculated, too sterile,
Some think it’s not creative, not imaginative, not interesting
Nonsense
When you want to be creative — you’re creative
When you want to be fanciful — you’re fanciful
When you want to have fun — you have fun
When you want to EXPLORE — you explore
BUT
When you want to solve a problem — you solve the fucking problem
When you want to solve a problem — you solve the problem
Of COURSE you’re pragmatic
You have real problems — you go find some real solutions
You need a tool — you pick that tool and use it
You need information — you go find it
You need help — you go ask for help
Of course you’re pragmatic
Now,
Of course EXPLORING makes you stumble upon solutions, improvements, innovations
Of course you want to be creative and NOT merely solve the problem once — but solve it forever — or solve it beautifully — or solve it at scale
And of course you don’t just want to view the world as merely “solving problems” — you want to have fun with it, fun while you’re at it
but
It’s easy to lose sight of the original reason why you started doing something in the first place
Now you’re enjoying yourself playing this fun game,
You had a problem to solve once: money-problem, success-problem, purpose-problem, love-problem, self-worth-problem, health-problem, joy-problem, spirit-problem — and you set about solving that problem…
…and perhaps you even solved it, or perhaps you didn’t — but you got so invested in that GAME — that now you can’t stop playing…
money-game, success-game, meaning-game, love-game, self-worth-game, health-game, happiness-game, spirituality-game…
now you play those games,
and despise the “pragmatic”,
because pragmatism would RUIN your game
because it would make you realise that you playing it is pointless, or ineffective,
that you don’t even know why you’re doing it, actually
that really you’re only doing it as a distraction
that really you’re only doing it out of habit
that really you’re only doing it now because DOING AND NOT GETTING IT became part of your identity
that you say you want the thing but you only want the APPEARANCE
I do want you to have fun
AND be creative, inspired, enthusiastic
But i want you to be PRAGMATIC, in the same time
I want you to remember WHY you’re doing it
I want you to have GOALS and go HARD after them
Not because those goals are even so important,
But because they keep your SELF-DELUSION at bay
REAL GOALS requiring REAL OUTCOMES preclude you from DELUDING YOURSELF
Because you can’t fake real outcomes
So go get some REAL WORLD OUTCOMES
Set about it PRAGMATICALLY — like a PRO
And as you’re at it : THEN HAVE FUN
And THEN be creative
But first be PRAGMATIC
In truth: ALTERNATE the two
Go EXTREMELY PURPOSEFULLY after your goals,
After that EXPLORE some, TRY things, do WHATEVER YOU WANT, be FREE,
Then AGAIN set a goal and fucking KILL it
Then again try some things
Oh and then set some goal which requires unclear solutions,
Break it down to chunks,
Those you can solve — solve PRAGMATICALLY
Those you can’t solve — TINKER with. PLAY WITH. EXPERIMENT. EXPLORE.
This is how you reconcile these two
And you must NEVER CONFUSE THE TWO!!!
When you’re exploring — please be exploring
When you’re pragmatic — you’re fucking pragmatic
And when you’re both exploring AND being pragmatic — you’re WELL AWARE where you’re being pragmatic, where you’re being creative — and how you use the two together
But you NEVER distract yourself from the REAL PROBLEM, REAL REASON, REAL POINT
And you LOVE being pragmatic
Because you’re interested in real outcomes
