Entertainment is so fucking boring
Fun is so boring
Pleasure is boring too
Work is not boring
Fulfilment is not boring
(Real) Challenge is not boring
Love is not boring, power is not boring, strength is not boring
It even sounds right, what I just wrote, all “philosophy” aside
Who would put “fun” or “entertainment” over “power” and “love” and “strength”?
We only do fun and entertainment because we’re scared and lazy and too fucking ANAEMIC to live ourselves
And again, all philosophy aside, it’s quite simply what happens
Have you ever felt like you had a very clear idea of something cool, or useful, or good to do, but just felt a little lazy and inert?
And when you finally did it — you regretted not having done it immediately
And you regretted all the times when you didn’t do it, and instead did nothing, nothing memorable, nothing meaningful
It’s not some epic battle between good and evil, glory and shame
It’s as prosaic as you in front of your fucking TV — or NOT
What about work?
Work is only boring if you’re being lazy, lethargic
You’re being lazy:
-with what you do
–how you do it
-why you do it (purpose)
There’s nothing boring about work,
Money is not boring. Try making million dollars and see if it’s boring
Usefulness is not boring. Try doing some engineering and see if it’s boring. Or try tangibly improving your life
Entertainment and fun are boring
We only “do” entertainment when we have nothing better to do
Waste of life
I don’t want you to hate entertainment,
I don’t want you to hate yourself in front of the TV
There’s no need to hate anything
There’s no need to hate something to let it go
If you hate your fun and entertainment and pleasure — it will become a forbidden fruit — and will only (seem to) taste better, and enslave you all the worse
All I want you to do is REMEMBER
when you’re watching other people do things — remember you’re not doing things yourself
And when you’re watching other people live — remember you’re NOT LIVING yourself
But let’s not get dramatic
Just remember — and THEN try finding something JUST A LITTLE BIT more… energetic
A little bit more individual, a little bit more empowering, a little bit more creative
A little bit more alive
SLOWLY build up from that
Find that energy
Find that courage
Find that engagement
Find that focus
Entertainment is boring, it doesn’t energise you, it doesn’t empower you, it doesn’t truly compel you, it only numbs you and distracts you
The more you begin to see it, the weaker it becomes
And the more you see it the more energy you find, the more power you find
Because you learn that you’re the source of your power
Like you’re the source of your happiness, you’re the source of your engagement, you’re the source of your appreciation,
Perhaps this is the greatest significance of this realisation
That you don’t ever have to take the back seat
That you don’t have to be entertained
That you don’t have to stop and put your feet up, and let others live now, watch others live now,
That at all times — YOU can LIVE yourself
You can ENTERTAIN yourself
