Someone’s BEST can be result of many random factors:
–LUCK
-rare FLASH of brilliance
-temporary MOTIVATION
-even strategic effort to impress, get a job, etc
Someone’s worst is far less volatile:
-it at very least speaks of someone’s MINIMUM STANDARD
-it’s the BEST for predicting the future — as it gives a RELIABLE BASELINE
-the WORST is likely to be improved.
One’s BEST is not only unlikely — but often outright impossible, BY DEFINITION, to IMPROVE
It requires assumption that people CAN improve, fundamentally. Which is in practice quite a tall order.
However making someone attempt to do their best, vs their average — is a more reasonable goal
Indeed,
With people PESSIMISM BIAS is preferable
LIFE teaches so
as you watch people WASTE their lives, give up on their dreams, and ultimately, stop even trying.
DATING teaches so
Get someone whose already a great fit. Don’t try to fit what doesn’t fit
But best of all it’s shown in BUSINESS
Business is when you literally CAN’T NOT admit this truth — not without going BANKRUPT
You can’t pretend someone performs better than they do, or base your business on unrealistic hopes
People are extremely hard to change
Best display pessimism bias with people
Best take them if their worst is good enough
Then but try to have them perform at their best
The room for optimism is where there’s a realistic possibility of gain, and that gain is potentially tremendous
You really only have to get lucky so many times in life. Get very lucky once, and you might have solved a lifetime problem
You want optimism bias so that you give yourself more chances of getting lucky
People, however, rarely ever change
And when they do, it’s rarely ever so dramatic
And if it’s so dramatic — it’s rarely you who benefit from it
