Extreme urgency is a form of creativity
It’s creativity applied to SOLVING the problem… faster
We get more creative when the problem is more hard
We create a solution
That’s what creativity is for, as far as I’m concerned
We don’t customarily think of speeding something up as a CREATIVE process
We think of a work of art — we don’t ask how fast it was created
We behold a marvellous piece of engineering — we don’t ask how fast it was developed, tested, built
In the history book we don’t value it more because it was done faster
It may be an interesting footnote, interesting trivia — but the story is there because the product was momentous in the first place
…Except this is now how this world works, is it
History books don’t care how long you took…
…provided you actually took no longer than your lifetime!
Provided you didn’t DIE before you finished
Provided you didn’t go BANKRUPT before you finished
Don’t get me wrong, great things take time to mature
Just NOT TOO much time
When people tell you to NOT rush, to take your time, to DEDICATE yourself — they mean:
-go into greater detail
-don’t give up too early
-and pay your DUES by dedicating ton of precious time of your life to this project…
-…time others are not willing to spend…
(…or else it would have already been done!)
But what they forget to tell you is that there is only SO much time,
That NOTHING is BEYOND URGENCY
Because time is the most scarce resource of all
Even if you have your ENTIRE LIFE for it — that is VERY little time
I am not a believer in stupid rushing,
You can rush and still be slow and ineffectual
I’m not a believer in hand-waving
And I’m not a believer in grand words
All that is just the window dressing
At the end your seriousness boils down to:
-setting a goal
-making a reasonable plan
-setting time frame
-AND actually making it happen
That’s seriousness
Everything else is window-dressing
And if you set a hard goal, too hard…
you can start crying, you can start boasting, you can start running your mouth — I don’t care
I only care if you did it
And if you want to do it — you will have to be creative
Nothing more
Your effort and work — is just a resource like any other
It’s how you manage it which matters
If the goal is impossibly hard — you will have to be impossibly creative
AND LIKEWISE with time
If you set impossible deadline — I don’t care what you say now
NOR do I care how hard you tried
If you fail — it’s your fault that you set impossible time frame. Do better
And if there’s a tiniest chance to do it…
…then go for it — and you will have to be unbelievably creative
Indeed, let me reiterate
The ORIGINAL purpose of creativity is solving problems,
and if you solve them truly beautifully — it’s artistic, elegant
URGENCY is merely yet another problem to solve
AND,
if you set a hard goal — chances are you will NEED some urgency
before you run out of energy, time and capital
Again,
Urgency is not running around like a fucking chicken with its head cut off
It’s not setting ridiculous deadlines, although some mad lads thrive in such delusional environment
It’s BEING CREATIVE
And UNDERSTANDING VERY WELL that this TIME is THE MOST PRECIOUS RESOURCE
So there’s NEVER time to just slow down
And again,
Not in a pejorative sense, as if there’s never time to relax, never time to smell the roses,
There’s NEVER TIME to CEASE being UTMOSTLY CREATIVE
There’s NEVER TIME to just offhandedly give up time, give up this absolute WEALTH,
It must at every moment be deployed with utmost care, reverence
And then deployed in the most creative way, using all the powers of intellect and imagination
