You Can’t Comprehend Numbers

You can’t comprehend numbers

You haven’t evolved with a bank account. There were no bank accounts in your cave and no numbers in your cave… not larger then 10 or 20 or what-have you. Surely not larger then 100

You can’t comprehend what is going on with your money. You feel in control because you’re delusional. You don’t know how much you spent on what

You don’t know how much you spent on coffee this week. You don’t know how much you save by getting cheaper butter and not kerry gold. You have no idea how much a month you spend dining out. You don’t consider what % of your income those Italian vacations cost you.

I see people make insignificant savings on cheap things and then squander large amounts in few stupid buys and “investments”

I see all kinds of financial stupidity in either direction, often simultaneously. Buying crap to save pennies. Wasting tons because the packaging was so attractive

When there is not AWARENESS brought to this subject — there will be stupidity

And you can’t comprehend numbers… EVERYONE should have a spreadsheet

You can’t comprehend the passing of time

Hour passes after hour until it’s 8 hours

Then 40 hours

Then 160 hours

Then 1920 hours or something

…not that it matters. You lost count after 2

You don’t know how much time you’ve been checking your mail, how long you chatter under the water cooler, how long your lunch took

You don’t know how much of that was important, how much was innovative, how much was necessary, how much was squandered

You just don’t know

Your mind doesn’t comprehend that

And all the illusions of that comprehension are erroneous — and if you did the math — you’d be shocked

You can’t comprehend how much you’ve done

You don’t discriminate between checking your mail, writing a report, and actually creating something

You don’t assign value to appraise your activities

You don’t know how productive you are. You don’t know how well you manage the resource of your attention

And unless you are profoundly single minded, and do everything with divine spontaneity and purity — then you probably do need more control over your outcomes

organise your activities

—assign values to them

—make a SPREADSHEET and monitor how much time and energy each took

—and monitor what outcomes each yielded

do this because your intuition will not help you with that. Your intuition know fuck all about numbers.

Do this for as long as you have anything to do with numbers

Chances are you do

Get all your numbers on paper, in a nice google docs spreadsheet (obviously in cloud), make due calculations, monitor everything, organise everything

It’s not a matter of fastidiousness — it’s a matter of not being illogical and stupid

Do this
