About Diversity

What is diversity? Variety?

Variety is when object has varied attributes (as compared to some other object).

Diversity is when you have a group of objects diverse in their attributes.

Is diversity good?

Diversity is neither good nor bad.

There can be multitude of objects diverse in various good qualities.

There can be multitude of objects diverse in various bad qualities.

There can be multitude of objects diverse in different good and bad qualities.

And of course there can be multitude of objects diverse in neither good nor bad qualities.

Or MEANINGLESS qualities.

Is diversity good? Depends on your goals.

Is your goal promotion of certain values, you consider “good”?

Then the more objects displaying more virtues in more ways — the better.

The more value the better! The more values the better. The more ways in which that value is exemplified, conveyed — the better!

Is diversity good? Depends on your goals.

Is your goal reflection of the real world?

In that case the REAL world is diverse in certain ways and less diverse in other ways, and it depends on what part of the world you take at what time.

Is diversity good in and of itself? Good because it exists?

Diversity is either “good” because:

—it’s diversity of good qualities, good values

—or a REFLECTION of the world the way GOD made it, beyond our comprehension — therefore the better the more accurately it is reflected

The latter is not just philosophical gibberish — but understanding that unknown comprises both good and bad. Therefore excluding it can come at the cost of the good.

Diversity is NOT good in and of itself. NOT unless it reflects the world. OR is a diversity of good — which is good in the first place.

False diversity is either meaningless — or harmful.

Diversity is meaningless if it’s a diversity of irrelevant qualities.

You don’t care how “diverse” the bills in your wallet are — you only care for the sum they represent as an aggregate.

You do care if the businesses you own are diverse. You do want to know that should one industry be disrupted — you still own businesses in other industries.

You don’t care how diversely people in your bushiness look — you only care for the work they make as an aggregate.

You do care if people in your business have diverse abilities. You DO understand that diverse challenges are best matched with diverse abilities.

etc.

Diversity is harmful if it’s diversity of bad qualities — or distraction from the TRUE diversity of the world.

Diversity of bad qualities is just bad qualities — which is just bad, in and of itself.

And diversity as distraction is basically MEANINGLESS DIVERSITY distracting from TRUE DIVERSITY.

The same way as meaningless similarities distract from true similarities.

E.g. diversity of look of your employees distracts from the diversity of their abilities.

Obviously we understand none of the above,

Otherwise we wouldn’t confuse meaningful diversity with meaningless diversity.

Otherwise we would distinguish between “good” diversity and “bad” diversity.

Obviously we conflated diversity with good. Just like 100 years ago in certain country they conflated exclusivity with good.

There’s GOOD, and there’s DIVERSITY, and there’s GOOD DIVERSITY. Period.

Those are 3 different things.

If we can’t tell them apart then we can’t pursue them. And we get opposite effect of what we presumably intend. Neither more “good” nor more real-world-like.
