The Fallacy of Poor Quality

Poor quality

Carelessness

Sloppiness

Mediocrity

We think we can get away with that

Or we think we’re doing “quantity” instead of quality

Or we think we are being practical

But we aren’t

You can do it in higher quality, you can do it faster, you can do it cheaper

All of the above are an improvement

Higher quality is higher quality: greater utility, greater durability, etc.

Done faster is done more, and more on time (that means before time)

Cheaper is also better because you facilitated accessibility

You can do it in higher quality, you can do it faster, you can do it cheaper

But you must not do it worse

You must not do it sloppy

You must not do it careless

You must put your heart and soul into it

See we think we can get away with poor quality

No

There’s only one way of doing things — the right way

Even when you make it “cheaper” — the net gain by making it more accessible compensate for the decrease in quality

Therefore it is ultimately an improvement

It can only be an improvement

Deterioration is not acceptable

See we think we can get away with poor quality — because we love deluding ourselves

We delude ourselves because we are weak

We are weak and want to preserve our energy

We don’t want to spend this precious resource on some nebulous notion of “quality”

We just want to get the fucking job done, get paid and go home

…but this poor quality returns to us

The poor quality you permit of your work is the poor quality you permit of your life

It’s everything, the ugly objects around you, the ugly people, the ugly pay, the ugly future

Your poor work is poorly rewarded

Or else it’s you next time on the receiving end of inferiority and ineptitude

All the work you ever do — you really do for you

You live in the house you build

As you make your bed so you must lie

You eat the shit you cooked for yourself

Every single compromise will affect you directly

Every single improvement will affect you directly

It’s obviously as true on the macro scale

How you treat others — so they treat you

How much money you make your employer — so much he will pay you

As valuable you are to the world — as much the world will give you value back

But we deny this truth

It’s easier to deny it when the consequences aren’t so direct

In the cavemen days — if you were too lazy to catch prey — you’d sleep with an empty stomach… and so would your family

Today your sloppiness and carelessness is only revealed much later

And then you still find someone else to blame

“You worked so hard”

“You did what you were told”

“It worked”

“The boss doesn’t appreciate me”

“THE WORLD doesn’t appreciate me”

And then you go on doing sub-standard work

You go on NOT doing the ABSOLUTE BEST YOU CAN

But we deny this truth

It’s easier to deny it when the consequences seem hidden

They are obviously not hidden, you fool

OBVIOUSLY what you did in poorer quality will have poorer utility and poorer durability

You don’t have to know WHAT EXACTLY shall break to know that something will more likely break

You know it because you know what you did inferiorly

The consequences are NOT hidden

Because YOU know how well you did your job, your art, your duty

So please understand

It is never justified to compromise on quality

It’s a fundamental delusion that it is ever justified

You don’t “get away” with poor quality — you pay the full price for your misgivings

Be merry!

It’s great news to KNOW WHAT TO DO

You were wasting time seeking cunning lil shortcuts and stupid tricks

You were wasting time trying to sell shit

Now you can finally focus on quality

You are free to focus on what matters

You are free from the confusion

It’s tremendously easy now — just do things WELL

And you should make things well
