The point of originality is evolution
It’s by definition original if it’s new
To evolve one must go beyond
Go beyond the known and old
Go into the unknown, go into the wild — and return with something new
Some new contribution
Some new contribution
But not just any contribution
The point of originality is not originality — it is evolution
The contribution must relate to the pre-existing structure
Thus there can be useless originality — or there can be originality which is indicative of evolution, elevation, change, the new
Likewise — unoriginality should be a stepping stone
Before you go beyond the map — you must first get to the edge of the map
You traverse the known before you can discover the unknown
Unoriginality should be a stepping stone
Originality is some indication of the new, the uncharted, the unexplored, the promising, the transcendent
Now the problem emerges when you confuse the two
The problem emerges when you confuse the two
When you reinvent the wheel and rediscover the obvious
When you engage in the obvious and unoriginal as though it is original and unexplored
When you fail to appreciate the original, the unusual, the fantastical
I do believe it is a problem when someone becomes too comfortable in his own little nieche
I do believe it is a problem when someone engages oneself in false creativity
It betrays elementary self-delusion
Deluding oneself about the substance of one’s work
Playing stupid games and separating oneself from the real world, real growth, real progress
Likewise I do believe the fantastical and original is elementarily underrated and misunderstood
Obviously it’s misunderstood — it is unknown — and as said: it’s often unrelatable
However the returns from the unknown are utterly disproportionate
Experimentation is thus precarious in nature — but potentially extremely remunerative
I do believe one ought to be biased in favour of the unknown, experimentation, exploration, innovation
Thus please understand the meaning of “originality”
THE POINT IS EVOLUTION
Ask yourself about someone’s work — is it evolving — or is it merely weird?
Ask yourself about someone — is he evolving — or is he just looking for attention
AND consider background. Is that organisation, or that person — is it even in the place to evolve?
It the time ripe for evolution? Or is it premature? Is the technology ready? Is the culture ready? Etc.
There are all those questions — and they should guide you in this strange world of strange things and strange men — and our quest for something substantial, something meaningful, something creative and original
