The hardest part about thinking outside the box is the box
How do you know your box?
Where does it begin and where does it end?
How do you know you escaped the box?
What’s if you’re merely in the compartment of the box with “unconventional” written over it?
You’re still in the fucking box
And then there’s the significant problem that you actually really like your box
It’s your familiar space
Safe space
It gives you frames from which you can effectively operate
And so it happens you set about doing something creative, with this little mantra of “thinking outside the box”
and you go to this part of the box which smells a little less conventional
and perhaps there’s enough inspiration in there to propel you
or perhaps not
either way you’re still in the box
So if you find yourself in that situation
just understand that to leave the box — you have to leave the fucking box
that means abandoning, temporarily or not, your methods and crutches and procedures
this doesn’t merely imply little discomfort and instability
it also implies INFERIOR RESULTS
that is the part often overlooked
you want to elevate your creativity, your design,
but you don’t want to make it worse!
you want to make it better; you want more inspiration so that it is more inspired; so that you innovate and improve and expand
but you don’t understand that to move forward you have to move back,
to be free you have to give up,
just keep this trade in mind
you want a real breakthrough?
let go of GOOD RESULTS
prepare yourself to FAIL
that is the meaning of EXPERIMENTATION
and be vigilant of yourself falling into this trap,
be vigilant of stagnating
I believe the problem with stagnating is not the unwillingness to progress — but the unwillingness to REGRESS
But this regress is necessary
Don’t EVER get attached to nothing
Your possessions are the least of this problem of attachment — it’s your psychological addictions
Such as your marriage to your reputation
Such as your love affair with your narrow area of competence
LET GO of all that
fuck the box
also
don’t view this text as mere theorising, a fancy-sounding pep-talk
it’s easy to abstractly rant about “THE NEW”, the beyond, the esoteric…
I write this text as a reminder to MYSELF,
we get so attached to growing
what a fucking poison
we expect results
and we cease exploring
or we doubt ourselves
but there’s naugh to doubt
you go into the UNKNOWN in order to escape the known
you BURN THE BOX
you don’t EXPECT your well-known, consistent, pretty little GOOD RESULTS THERE,
your GOOD RESULTS stayed in the box
stayed in the known and boring PAST
now you’re looking for more
you’re looking for SHIT RESULTS
and you’re looking for EXCELLENCE
