When you’re a public person — you probably ought to shut your fucking mouth
No, not because you’re a coward, and scared of owning up to your beliefs
But because you’re wise enough to understand that your cute little opinions are not so fucking important
AND YET,
may be misleading to others
and thus do more harm than good
See unless you’re already in the “opinion about everything” business,
which hopefully you’re not, hopefully you have a real job, and provide some value to the society,
If you’re running a real enterprise — you should be quite content with THAT comprising your contribution to society
But more than that — you should naturally understand that this is the most likely area in which you can actually be useful
It’s probably your ability and expertise which are likely to make a difference
Not your stupid little opinion
And it’s likely the former for which you are paid, for which you are rewarded by the world
Not your stupid little opinion
And MORE than that
Your stupid little opinion likely doesn’t HELP your real project, your real purpose
It only distracts from what matters — which is your work
It sows doubt into the hearts of those who wanted to do business with you
What if you have poor judgement?
What if your succeeding is good for the business but not good for the world?
etc.
And still MORE than that,
Since you became a public person — that entails you gained some degree of prominence, authority
But in speaking now on matters which are outside your circle of competence — you are basically borrowing this influence and authority, rightfully earned in one matter — to mislead others into taking your opinion seriously OUTSIDE of it,
And you’re hijacking your designated communication channel to broadcast unrelated matters,
This is unprofessional
And it doesn’t help others form their own opinions, to know your stupid little opinion
Now,
I suppose if you genuinely believed that your contribution in another area could be as serious as your contribution in your main field — then it could justify you venturing out
But that is, naturally, not likely
Again: can’t you just focus on what you’re good at?
Again: since you’re now a public person — you’ve far greater responsibility to, well, act responsibly, and wield your power and influence productively, and not foolishly and self-servingly
The luxury of having different opinions and doing 10 different things has been ceded by you when you became so important and powerful in that one thing
But yes,
if you’re still convinced you’ve so much more to give,
and that re-branding your current identity, role,
and co-opting your power,
is the best course of action,
then I suppose go ahead,
Just do it responsibly,
With profound comprehension that you’re running on borrowed credibility
And that history may not be kind to you, and your little foray into whatever
And that maybe feeling so IMPORTANT was not worth trading ACTUALLY being important, and building something important,
Maybe if you shut your fucking mouth — you would have built something truly great
Actually,
this statement is true also for non-public people
Shutting your mouth and doing the work is usually the better idea
Having an opinion can be necessary, can be a waste of time, and can definitely be a massive distraction
Maybe don’t take yourself so seriously, and just do what you’re actually GOOD AT
