Gift of suffering is gift of gratitude
Gift of good fortune is poisoned
NOT ALWAYS,
I don’t want no martyrs.
Martyrdom and pessimism are self-fulfilling prophecies
Kill yourself like a martyr and tell me what good it brought, if you can
But yes
You become virtually DISABLED from gratitude, appreciation — when you:
-have gotten it too easily
-have gotten used to it
It’s a prison
Light is only bright next to darkness
If all you know is light — then you don’t know light
You really don’t know light. Not just philosophically
If all you know is having something — you can’t conceive of not having it
You can make yourself entertain such thought, philosophically… but it’s still just an abstraction. You know it’s not real
You know it’s not real because IT’S NOT REAL. You NEVER KNEW different reality.
Likewise with getting something easily,
How could you possibly value it?
You can try convincing yourself that’s it’s rare, it’s valuable, or how much you’re fond of it
But the REAL PRICE is the PRICE YOU PAID FOR IT
We get used to things really quickly
I suppose it makes sense. Once things have been FIXED a certain way — and PROVEN over time to stay — why should you waste your mental resources on it any longer? Go do something new
This is both a feature and a bug
It hopefully makes you do something new
It unfortunately continuously supplies you with new reasons to be impatient, unhappy, and fucking ungrateful
Therefore
Please APPRECIATE your struggles
Not out of greed for the future “gratitude” you will obtain, a future smug satisfaction with having overcame great adversity. This would have made it false, disingenuous, contrived.
CALMLY appreciate your struggle as giving you INSIGHT into RELATIVITY OF VALUE
And TEACHING YOU IN GENERAL what it means to be GRATEFUL
Because even if you’re somehow made “grateful” for one thing — you’ll still be a thankless bastard with something else
It’s inevitable
The real lesson is that FEELING of GRATITUDE, period
INCLUDING sense of GRATITUDE for STRUGGLE AND ADVERSITY — which are THE best teachers
And finally: compassion for those who never learned those lessons. Shut in their golden palaces with their pills
Close your eyes and experience gratitude
If you struggled for it, if you sacrificed a lot for it, if you suffered for it, if you paid a steep price for it — now that you have gotten it — PERHAPS you can appreciate it
Perhaps you can be grateful for it
Close your eyes and experience this this appreciation, experience this gratitude
Experience this love
Memorise that feeling
Try looking at everything else around you with that feeling
Conceive of your own rotting flesh not long from now
Then experience that feeling again
Don’t let it fade away
