There’s a spectrum between you:
-being focused on the thing which must be done
-being focused on everything else but the thing
We explore the whole spectrum: sometimes getting “in the zone”, sometimes procrastinating entirely, sometimes everything in between, multi-tasking, etc.
You can do whatever the fuck you want
You don’t even have to do the “right thing”
Or you can half-do it, slowly do it, do a little bit of this, a little bit of that,
Just don’t delude yourself that you are focused
Don’t delude yourself that you are NOT distracted
Because there’s an extremely simple way of proving how focused you are
You just have to close your eyes
Close your eyes
Don’t move
And NOW focus
This is what it feels like to be focused
This is what it feels like to be focused
There’s no redundant stimuli
There is no chaotic pointless movement
There is only darkness, only silence, only stillness — and the problem at hand
This is what it feels like to be focused
And now that you know — there is no turning back
You don’t have to always be so focused
But you can’t delude yourself that you are focused — NOT when you’re NOT
And if you have something important to do,
If you gave your word,
If you understand that it will require you to focus,
Now you know what it MEANS to focus
Now you know what it means to NOT distract yourself
It’s not so easy
The good news is — it’s FAR more effective
But the best news is — you no longer delude yourself
Over our lifetimes we become experts at distracting ourselves and deluding
It reaches a point where some things we are just utterly unable to do
We don’t even realize we’re not doing those things — we think we’re doing them — but during the thing — we are giving it 0% of our attention
That is the true blight of distraction
We can become so good at it that our entire life passes us by
Therefore close your fucking eyes, shut your fucking mouth, and focus
Do less — but with no distractions
Speak less — but without nonsense
Think less — but clearly
Close your eyes, be calm, simple, focused
Less is so much more
(because more means more nonsense and distraction — and LESS of the true substance)
Please be simple
