The Problem With Modernity Is That We Are Simply Not Modern

Mankind is not so modern.

We are old.

Governed by our instincts.

Our best response to our bestiality is to hamper it with laws and regulations. Which itself is bestiality (answering force with the threat of a force).

This barely even works and we will probably kill each other soon. Whatever.

Instead I would like to address the problem of modern technology, and the corresponding conveniences.

We are not ready for it.

As said – we don’t really transcend our instincts. Our consciousness is really low.

Perhaps if we don’t kill each other — we will just kill ourselves.

We are not ready for the quick stimuli.

We are not ready for the completely interconnected world.

We are not ready to have a virtual avatar.

We are not even ready for life in large cities.

We are not ready to think long-term.

We are not ready to do what we want.

Thus we get addicted to the next most pleasurable thing. Whether it’s crack cocaine or facebook.

Thus we get so attached to our little place and out little life.

Thus we identify with an image of ourselves which is not real. No more real then ego. It’s like a virtual ego, that virtual avatar.

Thus we’re still so socially anxious.

Thus we can’t stick up to our plans, take responsibility for our lives.

Thus we must always adhere to some master – to tell us what to do and give meaning to our lives.

It is a useful heuristic for the modern times. A useful guideline. It is useful to ask ourselves:

Is this NATURAL to being human — or does it have to be approached with a special kind of intelligence?

Modernity is only getting started. It is about to explode. We are already inapt. We are depressed and addicted. It’s not a grim image – just a reflection of certain aspect of the reality.

Be intelligent about it. Not prejudiced but be leery. Cautious. Remember that seeking pleasure doesn’t bring pleasure. Remember that you are not your status. Remember that you can’t accumulate nothing in this world. Remember those things — when the modern times offer you a tempting alternative.

Use fancy tools but live a simple life.
