Politicians should be boring
Structure should be boring
Law and order should be boring
Processes should be boring
The world is chaotic enough
Not only in bad a way, such as:
wars, including culture wars,
plagues, pandemics,
crises,
natural disasters
But also in good way, such as:
cultural evolution,
scientific progress,
etc.
Politics should be a cushioning, a buffer, at most
In the spirit of the principle of subsidiarity — government should really only get involved when it is necessary,
necessary also means where it can do the most good — albeit scope of things it’s good at is a subject of contentious debate, obviously.
but it definitely is, by the nature of its scale, best disposed to deal with large-scale coordination problems,
so that in the situation of chaos and turmoil and change — it can uniquely help solve problems and stabilise the situation
OTHER THAN THAT it of course should be boring
As boring as something you don’t notice
Uninteresting
Unexciting
That which functions the same way all the time is, naturally, boring
That which functions without you even noticing it is even more boring
That’s what politics, government, and politicians, should be like
…instead we’ve got those fucking clowns
political Influencers and pundits, turning this serious subject into a fucking braindead entertainment,
your uncle and your coworker turning it into distraction and compensation of their own inadequacy,
and of course the power hungry themselves,
whether it’s those fools in the office, or grey eminences,
sometimes impressive and sometimes anything but,
but usually as spiritually destitute and deranged by delusions of importance and grandness
as though life was about convincing others of how grand you are at things that others convinced you are so grand and important
Oh and of course,
the more entertaining, exciting it gets — the more entertaining and exciting it will continue getting
Because it’s a vicious circle
Drama begets more drama
Polarisation begets more polarisation
Conflict begets more conflict
Until the world really does start resembling an action movie, a war movie, the kind of movie that’s truly very entertaining,
You get what you wanted
Politics should be boring
A well-run system is boring
The state is not a fucking start-up. It can’t afford to just die
A responsible politician is boring. Responsibility is boring.
Our expectations from our politicians should be that of boring bureaucrats
(and even at that restraint, not too excited about bureaucracy — or else that thing itself becomes a monster, as it usually does)
If you want entertainment — go start a business, or go create something
If you want purpose or something important — go start a business, or go create something
If you want excitement — go start a business, or go create something
If you want competition — go start a business, or go create something
And if that’s not enough — you’re the problem
And don’t go into politics, or get enamoured by politics,
Else you’ll ruin it
